Hold onto your butts, because Scarlett Johansson is about to take on a whole new breed of killer in the first trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth. Universal has unveiled the first trailer, setting up an intense and action-packed instalment following a team led by Johansson’s Zora Bennett as they embark on a high-stakes mission to a remote island. The location, once a research facility tied to the original Jurassic Park, now serves as a refuge for dinosaurs deemed too dangerous for the rest of the world.
Jonathan Bailey’s Dr. Henry Loomis, a paleontologist, and Mahershala Ali’s Duncan Kincaid, a key member of the expedition, join Bennett in navigating the perilous landscape. Rupert Friend’s Martin Krebs, representing a major pharmaceutical company, assembles the team with the goal of securing DNA from the eggs of three massive dinosaur species. The plan, however, quickly spirals into chaos as the island proves far more treacherous than expected.
The full synopsis reads as follows: “Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, the planet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived. The three most colossal creatures within that tropical biosphere hold the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind.
Academy Award nominee Johansson plays skilled covert operations expert Zora Bennett, contracted to lead a skilled team on a top-secret mission to secure genetic material from the world’s three most massive dinosaurs. When Zora’s operation intersects with a civilian family whose boating expedition was capsized by marauding aquatic dinos, they all find themselves stranded on an island where they come face-to-face with a sinister, shocking discovery that’s been hidden from the world for decades.”

Director Gareth Edwards, known for The Creator (2023) and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), helms the film with a screenplay by David Koepp, whose return to the franchise brings a full-circle moment, having written Jurassic Park (1993) and The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997). A long-awaited moment for fans comes with the inclusion of a sequence originally conceived for Michael Crichton’s novel but never brought to life in previous films. The river raft set piece, featuring a high-stakes escape through dinosaur-infested waters, finally makes its way onto the big screen, per Vanity Fair. Koepp previously mentioned revisiting Crichton’s novels for inspiration in Variety, saying, “We did take some things from [the two novels]. There was a sequence from the first novel that we’d always wanted in the original movie, but didn’t have room for. We were like, ‘Hey, we get to use that now.'”
Striving for a grounded approach, Jurassic World Rebirth leans toward the tone and style of Spielberg’s original films rather than the CGI-heavy visuals of the previous Jurassic World trilogy. More practical effects, on-location shoots, and a focused storyline aim to recapture the awe and tension that made the franchise a global phenomenon.
Jurassic World Rebirth roars into cinemas on 2 July 2025.
