‘Resident Evil Requiem’ Writer Teases Game DLC That Expands Oswell E. Spencer’s Character Arc

Capcom reportedly has plans for Resident Evil Requiem’s DLC, one that is set to expand the character arc of the franchise’s iconic villain, Oswell E. Spencer.

Speaking during an interview with Distance NERDing Podcast at Meadowlark Comic Con, Resident Evil Requiem writer Haris Orkin let it slip that the team was working on a Spencer-related DLC, although he immediately admitted that he shouldn’t have said as much as he did.

“I usually see every villain as the hero of their own story,” Orkin explained. “We have an arc for Spencer in Requiem, and you kind of understand that more, and in the DLC, you will understand even further. Though I probably shouldn’t have said that.”

While not much is known about the game’s upcoming DLC, fans can now expect something a little more narrative-heavy compared to the previously released “rough-like” mode, Leon Must Die Forever, with Orkin’s comments indicating that the DLC might delve deeper into how the character went from villainous mastermind to the redemption arc he received in Resident Evil Requiem.

Oswell E. Spencer was the primary overarching antagonist of the Resident Evil franchise as the co-founder and president of Umbrella Corporation, the pharmaceutical front to conceal illegal bio-weapon and eugenics research, notably the experiments with the Progenitor Virus that eventually led to the  T-virus incident in Raccoon City.

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR Resident Evil Requiem! In the latest game, it was eventually revealed that Spencer started to express deep regret for his past actions, and in an effort to atone, created a powerful antiviral to neutralise all virus-based bioweapons called Elpis, alongside adopting the game’s main protagonist, Grace Ashford, to leave behind a legacy of hope rather than destruction, leaving clues to Grace that “Hope” was the password required to release Elpis.

With this in mind, the DLC could potentially explore what led to his change in perspective, or perhaps the DLC will only briefly touch on Spencer’s story, but for now, it’s all pure speculation until Capcom offers more concrete information.
