‘One Piece’ Live-Action Sails To No. 1 On Netflix With 18.5 Million Views

The Straw Hat Pirates have hit the jackpot! The One Piece series has sailed to the top of Netflix’s English-language TV charts during its premiere with 18.5 million views.

According to Netflix, the live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s hit manga series has taken the No.1 spot in 46 countries and landed in the Top 10 in 93 countries. In total, the series has amounted to 140.1 million hours viewed.

In comparison, One Piece faired much better than Cowboy Bebop. Cowboy Bebop was an adaptation of the popular anime series of the same name and opened at No.9 with 15.26 million hours viewed. Despite the hopes of showrunner André Nemec, the series was canceled after just one season. It starred John Cho, Daniella Pineda and Mustafa Shakir as Spike Spiegel, Faye Valentine and Jet Black.

That said, 18.5 million views is not a strong debut considering the massive dedicated fan base the One Piece manga and anime series have. And when set against other releases that made No.1 on Netflix, One Piece barely made waves.

Wednesday starring Jenna Ortega boasted 341.23 million hours viewed in its first week. It premiered with 43 million views. Queen Charlotte on the other hand, drew 148 million hours and debuted with 24 million views.

Of course, there is still time for One Piece to gain traction. This series has received rave reviews (read our review here) and positive word of mouth from viewers.

One Piece stars Iñaki Godoy as Luffy, Mackenyu as Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp, and Taz Skylar as Sanji. It follows the adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates as they explore the dangerous oceans, lands, and beyond in search of the ‘One Piece’, a fabled treasure that will make their captain, Luffy ‘King of the Pirates’.
