Next Entry In ‘Nier’ Franchise Teased For 15th Anniversary

Square Enix producer Yosuke Saito has teased that the studio will be sharing more information on the next title in the Nier franchise in 2025, to coincide with the series’ 15th anniversary.

In a recent set of interviews hosted by 4Gamer.net (and translated by Gematsu), a number of Japanese game developers reflected on their ambitions for the upcoming year, Saito included.

“2025 will be a milestone year as it marks the 15th anniversary of the Nier series, so I’d like to do something for it! What should we do, maybe something with the next game, or developments related to that, I’ve been hearing the fans’ expectations.” read his column.

As vague as his statement was, this certainly falls in line with his previous comments, stating that as long as series creator Yoko Taro is alive and involved, a third entry in the franchise would be in the cards. Taro also previously teased a sequel to 2017’s Nier: Automata during a Nier concert in London when he took to the stage, asking fans for the loudest round of applause of the night if they wanted a sequel. During the same concert, the word “REPENT” was shown repeatedly throughout, only for its wording to be changed to “R3PENT” at the end, seemingly a nod to the game and how a third mainline entry in the series might be on the horizon.

In any case, Nier: Automata might prove a tough act to beat, considering that the game has just reached a major milestone, selling more than 9 million copies to date in the eight years since its release, which was shared by its social media accounts. For now, fans just have to wait and see what’s in store for the franchise as its 15th anniversary in April 2025 draws near.
