New Virtua Fighter Teased At Tokyo Game Show 2020

It’s been a while since we heard about the Virtua Fighter franchise. The fighting game scene has recently been dominated by the likes of Street Fighter V, Mortal Kombat 11, and Tekken 7, but has been sorely missing the iconic fisticuffs title by Sega since its last mainline game, Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown, in 2010. But it appears that it is ready to come back from its dormancy soon.

At Tokyo Game Show 2020, Sega dropped a new trailer featuring a new Virtua Fighter x esports trailer as part of the Japanese dev’s 60th anniversary. The minute-long trailer above features the series’ iconic mascot, Akira Yuki, standing ominously after featuring a montage of pro gaming moments in previous Virtua Fighter tournaments over the years.

While details about this new project are still hazy, Sega did state that this is part of an effort to “restart” Virtua Fighter as an esports title as part of the anniversary in a recent blog update. If one could draw comparisons, Sega could be taking on a similar approach to Puyo Puyo Champions, an esports-focused title base on the dev’s Puyo Puyo puzzle franchise.

In any case, this could be the current- or next-gen VF that many have long clamoured for.

More details about this new VF project will be revealed at a later date.
