Alan Ritchson might be a monster of a man, but he is now facing his most formidable foe yet in Netflix’s upcoming sci-fi action flick, War Machine, which sees him square off against a giant bipedal mech.
Hailing from writer-director Patrick Hughes (The Hitman’s Bodyguard), War Machine follows a team of US Army Rangers who encounter an unknown otherworldly structure during a training exercise. This turns out to be a giant mech with looks akin to the Metal Gear tank seen in Konami’s Metal Gear gaming franchise, which promptly opens fire on the soldiers, igniting a David versus Goliath tale of survival against insurmountable odds.
Other cast members include Dennis Quaid, Stephan James, Jai Courtney, Esai Morales, Blake Richardson, Keiynan Lonsdale and Daniel Webber. War Machine is co-written by James Beaufort and produced by Hughes alongside Todd Lieberman, Alexander Young, Greg McLean and Rich Cook.
Fans will no doubt recognise Ritchson for his roles in the Amazon series Reacher, or action movies such as 2024’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Often portrayed as a character with unbeatable strength, it will be interesting to see him take on a more vulnerable role here, as strength means little to nothing when faced with a hulking robot armed to the teeth, meaning this time, he needs to resort to using his wits to outsmart the overpowered foe.
War Machine will launch on Netflix on 6 March 2026, with its trailer’s description reading, “On one last gruelling mission during Army Ranger training, a combat engineer must lead his unit in a fight against a giant otherworldly killing machine.”
