Netflix’s Live-Action ‘BioShock’ Film Will Be Based On First Game

Netflix’s live-action BioShock film adaptation might be taking its time to come to fruition, but producer Roy Lee has come forward to not only reassure fans that the movie is still happening, but also to drop a massive hint on which game’s narrative it will adapt.

This comes via an interview with The Direct, where Lee touched on the adaptation while promoting his latest film, The Long Walk. “Netflix wants us to keep everything under wraps,” he explained when asked to tease something about the upcoming movie, “But it’s definitely going to be based on the first BioShock game.”

Additionally, Lee also provided a rough timeline on when fans can expect the BioShock adaptation to grace the big screen, and unfortunately, they might be in for a long wait, as the film is set to be director Francis Lawrence’s (Constantine, Red Sparrow) next project after his upcoming film The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, which is set for release in November 2026.

The Long Walk became a reality because BioShock was delayed for a little bit where we had to do some more script work,” Lee explained, “And so as the script work is being done, we shot The Long Walk, and he was already committed to doing the next Hunger Games movie. And so it’s just waiting for him whenever the Hunger Games is completed, and the script is just being worked on right now.”

With these comments, it looks like production on BioShock will only begin in late 2026 at the earliest, meaning the movie will still need a couple of years in the oven before it’s ready. At least for now, fans can rest easy knowing that the film is still in the works, and that it will adapt arguably the best game in the franchise, and that they will eventually be able to witness the dystopian underwater city of Rapture come to life, and hopefully, will bring the iconic Splicers, Big Daddies and Little Sisters to life along with it.
