Netflix’s ‘Last Samurai Standing’ TV Adaptation Lands Nov Release

Netflix’s upcoming Last Samurai Standing live-action TV series adaptation has received its first teaser trailer, with the Japanese battle royale drama set for release in November.

Produced by and starring Okada Junichi (The Fable), the upcoming series is based on the 2022 Japanese manga series of the same name, which itself was based on a novel by Shogo Imamura. Junichi will join his fellow castmates Hamada Gaku as Superintendent General Kawaji Toshiyoshi, Okazaki Taiiku as Keage Jinroku, Tanaka Tetsushi as Bureau of Communications Chief Maejima Hisoka, Iura Arata as Home Minister Okubo Toshimichi, and Nakajima Ayumu as Okubo’s secretary Nagase Shinpei.

Alongside the newly announced cast, Last Samurai Standing’s lineup also includes Yumia Fujisaka, Kaya Kiyohara, Masahiro Higashide, Shota Sometani, Taichi Saotome, Yuya Endo, Yasushi Fuchikami, Kairi Jo, Takayuki Yamada, Wataru Ichinose, Riho Yoshioka, Kazunari Ninomiya, Hiroshi Tamaki, and Hideaki Ito.

Described as “a tribute to the indomitable spirit of warriors who lived through turbulent eras”, the show’s Netflix synopsis reads as follows:

Set in the late 19th century during the Meiji period, Last Samurai Standing thrusts viewers into a relentless life-and-death game. At nightfall, 292 warriors — including lead character Shujiro Saga — gather at Kyoto’s Tenryuji Temple, each lured by the promise of a massive cash prize. Each donning a single wooden tag, participants must steal the tags of their rivals and race to Tokyo to claim victory. As the signal sounds, the temple erupts into chaos, launching a brutal fight for survival where only one can stand victorious.

Last Samurai Standing will debut on Netflix on 13 November 2025 and will run for six episodes.
