Multiple R-Rated Projects Pending Greenlight At DC Studios, Says James Gunn

As DC Studios steps boldly into a new age of comic book movies, it seems R-rated works will form a core part of its identity. Head honcho James Gunn has revealed that he’s welcome to add them to the new DC Universe (DCU) slate, so long as the story warrants it.

“It’s not about testing out to see if this thing works. It’s just about telling a story. If a story is going to be R-rated, we’re totally okay with that,” Gunn told Collider. “If it’s going to be PG, PG-13, or G, I don’t care — whatever is worthy of the story, that’s what we’re going to do.”

The filmmaker continued by teasing that there’s “more than one” R-rated project currently pending the greenlight, attributing the demand for and potential of such content to the huge success of Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine.

“People love that character. People love that format for that thing. You know Peacemaker is unrated, basically. So, we have all sorts. I like the idea of doing all sorts of different things,” he added.

The approach aligns with the first project in the studio’s upcoming lineup, Creature Commandos, set to debut on 5 December with a TV-MA rating. The seven-episode animated series assembles a team of oddball anti-heroes for “missions deemed too dangerous for humans” and is based on the DC Comics featuring the eponymous team.

In contrast, Superman will bear a PG-13 rating, which fits the Man of Steel’s reputation as a family-friendly figure. The reboot starring David Corenswet is set to take flight on 11 July 2025, joining Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, The AuthorityThe Brave and the BoldSwamp Thing, and TV shows like Lanterns, Waller, Paradise Lost, Booster Gold, and more in fleshing out the vast DC Comics lore.
