Renowned horror director Mike Flanagan, known for his work on Netflix’s The Haunting anthology, has another thrilling project up his sleeve — an eight-episode miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie for Amazon Prime Video. This news was revealed during his appearances at New York Comic Con (NYCC), where he discussed his current and upcoming projects.

Carrie tells the harrowing tale of a bullied high school girl who, after a humiliating prank at her prom, unleashes her telekinetic powers in a vengeful rampage. The story has been adapted several times, starting with Brian De Palma’s iconic 1976 film featuring Sissy Spacek and John Travolta. This was followed by the less successful sequel, The Rage: Carrie 2, in 1999, and later adaptations in 2002 and 2013 by directors Bryan Fuller and Kimberly Peirce respectively.
Flanagan’s interest in King’s work is not new; he has previously adapted Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep. His adaptation of King’s short story, The Life Of Chuck, from the collection If It Bleeds, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and won the audience award. It’s set for a summer 2025 release by Neon. Additionally, Flanagan is developing a series based on King’s epic The Dark Tower.
Despite his deep dive into Stephen King’s universe, Flanagan is not limiting himself to King adaptations. He is ambitiously working on an Exorcist adaptation for Blumhouse, which he claims will be “the scariest movie I’ve ever made.”

Amazon MGM Studios has described the upcoming Carrie project as a “bold and timely reimagining,” focusing on the protagonist’s tumultuous high school experience and her struggles with her domineering mother, against a backdrop of emerging telekinetic abilities.
Flanagan’s shift to Amazon MGM Studios in 2022 has seen him continue his prolific output, with notable works like Midnight Mass, The Midnight Club, and The Fall of the House of Usher enhancing his reputation as a master of horror and supernatural narratives. As he juggles multiple ambitious projects, the film industry watches eagerly to see how he will redefine horror cinema in the years to come.
