R-Rated ‘Batman: Knightfall’ Animated Film Trilogy Pushes The Bat To His Breaking Point

Warner Bros. Entertainment and DC have dropped the first trailer for their upcoming Batman: Knightfall trilogy, a series of three R-rated animated films that see the caped crusader pushed to his limits while dealing with an overwhelming villainous threat.

The first part of the trilogy will adapt the story from the 1990s comic of the same name, which sees Batman take on the supervillain Bane. “When the mysterious behemoth known only as Bane frees Batman’s entire Rogue’s Gallery from Arkham Asylum, the Caped Crusader is pushed to his mental and physical breaking point,” reads the film’s official description.

The trailer sees Gotham in a state of disarray following an explosion at Arkham Asylum, releasing all manner of villains onto the city. It’s revealed that Batman and Robin had been dealing with the criminals for two days straight without sleep, with the latter wondering if they should call Jean-Paul for help to take the load off, referencing Jean-Paul Valley, also known as the vigilante Azrael.

Shortly after, Batman is seen unmasked and heading back to Wayne Manor, presumably to rest after a hard night’s work, only to be confronted by Bane, who is dead set on breaking the Bat. What follows is a montage of the film’s many action sequences, which sees numerous familiar faces like the Joker, Two-Face, the Riddler, and Azrael, who dons his iconic blue-and-gold suit from the comics.

The voice cast for Batman: Knightfall include Anson Mount (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds) as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Michael Mando (Better Call Saul) as Bane, and Pablo Schreiber (Halo) as Jean-Paul Valley/Azrael. Jeff Wamester (Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths) will direct the upcoming first film, with its screenplay written by Jeremy Adams (Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms).
