Matt Reeves’ “Gotham P.D.” HBO Max Prequel Series Focuses On Corrupt Cops Dealing With Rise Of The Batman

The Batman was perhaps the most-hyped panel at the DC FanDome digital event over the weekend, and for good reason. All eyes will be on Matt Reeves’ fresh take on the Dark Knight’s mythos to deliver big and push the DCEU to greater heights once it releases in 2021.

While everyone was getting pumped over how good Robert Pattinson looked and sounded as the new Batman in the teaser trailer (and, by extension, wondering just what it took to make Colin Farrell look so different from his regular self as the Penguin), there is also the small matter of the upcoming Gotham P.D. spinoff TV series coming to HBO Max.

During the panel for The Batman at DC FanDome, Reeves explained that where the film takes place during Bruce Wayne’s second year fighting crime as the Caped Crusader, Gotham P.D. will take place the year prior. But instead of it being in Batman’s shoes, it will shift the point of view to that of various members of the Gotham City Police Department, many of whom Reeves describes as “corrupt”, and how they deal with the prospect of a masked vigilante.

“You start to see the story through the point-of-view of these corrupt cops. And one in particular. The story is actually a battle for his soul. He’s a cop over generations and the history of corruption in Gotham is enormous and goes back many years,” said Reeves, who is co-creator of the series alongside The Sopranos producer and The Wolf of Wall Street writer Terence Winter.

Given that Gotham P.D. is still in early development, and with The Batman still only a quarter done with principal photography, it’ll still be a while till we get a little more out of what this show is all about, who is cast in it, and whether those from the movie will be making appearances here.
