Marvel’s ‘Blade’ Reboot Hits Another Roadblock As Film Drops Composer

The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) Blade reboot just can’t seem to catch a break, as the troubled film has hit yet another roadblock, as it has dropped the creative who was signed on to compose its music.

This unfortunate news comes from Steven Ellison (better known as Flying Lotus or FlyLo), a record producer, DJ, filmmaker, and rapper who was set to write music for the upcoming film. Taking to X\Twitter, Ellison expressed his disappointment over the ill-fated deal. “I guess we are so far from it even being a possibility now,” he wrote, “I was signed on to write music for the new BLADE movie before it fell [through]. Maybe it’ll come around again, but I doubt it. Would have been fun [though]”

This latest disappointment is far from the only snag the Mahershala Ali-led reboot has hit so far, as the film also recently lost acting legend Delroy Lindo (Sinners, Gone in 60 Seconds), who was previously set to appear but left the project. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lindo spoke about his experience with the film, seemingly confirming the alleged creative disagreements surrounding it.

“When Marvel came to me, they seemed to be really interested in my input,” Lindo recalled. “And in the various conversations I had with producers, the writer, the director at the time, it was all leading [to] being very inclusive. It was really exciting conceptually, but it was also exciting in terms of the character that was going to form. And then, for whatever reason, it just went off the rails.”

Prior to this, the film had already suffered setbacks, such as multiple directors who were attached to and subsequently left the project, like Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange, culminating in its indefinite delay in October 2024 when it was removed from Marvel’s release schedule.

Despite this, Marvel head Kevin Feige has assured fans that the film will arrive someday despite its delays. “We are committed to Blade. We love the character, we love Mahershala’s take on him. And rest assured: whenever we change direction with a project, or are still figuring out how it fits into our schedule, we let the audience know. You’re all up to date on what’s happening,” Feige explained in an interview with Omelete, translated by Gamesradar, “But I can tell you that the character will indeed make it to the MCU.”
