Marvel’s Anti-Heroes Assemble In First ‘Thunderbolts*’ Trailer

Disney has recently unveiled the first trailer for Marvel’s upcoming film Thunderbolts*, set to release in May 2025. This trailer, unexpectedly dropped, clocks in at three and a half minutes, packed with thrilling action sequences that promise an exciting addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)’s Phase 5 lineup.

Thunderbolts* is poised as Marvel’s counterpart to DC’s Suicide Squad, featuring a blend of villains and antiheroes assembled for a secretive mission. Julia Louis-Dreyfus stars as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, the orchestrator behind this team of misfits and miscreants, tasked with managing characters deemed expendable.

The trailer prominently showcases Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, portraying her struggle to find her place post-Black Widow. The dynamics within the team hint at potential conflicts and complex relationships, with the characters realising their expendable status under Valentina’s oversight. Additionally, a significant portion of the trailer teases Lewis Pullman’s character, Bob, who may be transforming into the enigmatic Marvel hero, Sentry. A shot in the trailer hints at Sentry’s emblem, raising questions about his role and allegiance within the storyline.

Marvel has also released the first Thunderbolts* poster alongside the trailer, hinting at the darker themes of the film with the tagline “careful who you assemble.”

The cast includes notable names such as Sebastian Stan returning as Bucky Barnes, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, and Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster. Geraldine Viswanathan joins the ensemble in a role initially intended for Ayo Edebiri, and Pullman steps in as a new iteration of Bob following Steven Yeun’s departure due to scheduling conflicts.

Directed by Jake Schreier (Star Wars: Skeleton Crew),Thunderbolts* is shaping up to be a unique venture within the MCU, characterised by a distinct tone and focus on less traditionally heroic characters. With no specific release date for the film announced yet, the continued rollout of the Thunderbolts* marketing campaign is highly anticipated.
