The Lord Of The Rings: The Hunt for Gollum marks the seventh live-action entry in the wider Lord of the Rings film franchise, and takes place between the events of the Hobbit prequel trilogy (2012-2014) and 2001’s The Fellowship of the Ring. The film will see a young Aragorn on a quest to capture Gollum before he can reveal the Ring’s location to Sauron.

The prequel will be directed by Serkis, with the original trilogy’s director, Peter Jackson, taking on the role as producer this time around. The movie’s script is penned by Phoebe Gittins, Arty Papageorgiou, Philippa Boyens, and Fran Walsh, with the latter two doubling up as its producers as well. The Lord Of The Rings: The Hunt for Gollum also marks the first live-action theatrical return to J.R.R. Tolkien’s world since 2014’s The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, and follows the 2024 animated feature, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.

The Lord Of The Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is slated for release on 17 December 2027.
