Kratos Recast For Amazon’s ‘God of War’ Series After Ryan Hurst Suffers Major Set Injury

Amazon’s God of War live-action series has hit an unexpected obstacle, as the role of Kratos will now be recast following a major injury sustained by actor Ryan Hurst on set.

As reported by Deadline, the decision was made after “careful consideration by the studios on the show” and comes after Hurst tore a bicep while doing a stunt on the show, with the actor having since undergone surgery and is now in recovery. His projected recovery time is unclear, but such injuries usually take around four to six months to heal, with further time needed for rest.

With this in mind, it would not be safe for the actor to resume filming until 2027, and the period required for Hurst’s full recovery was longer than the production shooting schedule could accommodate, resulting in the decision to recast the role. News of the recast would undoubtedly be a major blow for Hurst, especially since he underwent intensive physical training to prep for the role and had put on 40 pounds of muscle. According to Deadline’s sources, four episodes had been fully completed at the time of the incident.

God of War will now need to be reshot with a new actor taking over the role of Kratos, although Hurst’s replacement has not been announced yet. Preparations for the reshoots are expected to begin in August, with the start of production projected for mid-October.

God of War follows father and son Kratos and Atreus (Callum Vinson) as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human. The show also stars Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri and Danny Woodburn as Brok.
