DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, set to co-produce and executive produce every film and television series under the upcoming DC Universe (DCU) soft-reboot, has shared that the structure of the DCU shares more in common with Star Wars than its rival counterpart, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast by Josh Horowitz, Gunn shared about his plans with the different DC projects like Superman, Creature Commandos and Lanterns, explaining his goal to create separate stories set within the same universe, rather than sharing an overarching narrative.
“It’s not about real people in a real world, it’s about this mythical DC universe,” Gunn said, expressing his admiration for comic books and how different artists can have largely varied takes on the same characters even though they exist in the same universe.
“I don’t want everything to look the same all the time,” he continued, “We’re world building. We’re not story building. We’re not writing one story that has a beginning, middle, and end. We’re creating a universe in which people can go and join into this universe and experience it. It is much more like Star Wars than Marvel in that respect.”
Despite this, Gunn clarified that the DCU reboot will still feature certain elements of a shared narrative, such as having the same main villain across several films, although the goal is to keep these to a minimum.
The DCU reboot is currently underway with the release of the Creature Commandos animated series, running from now till 9 January 2025. Season 2 of Peacemaker will follow in August 2025, with other TV series like Lanterns, Waller and Booster Gold still set for release sometime in the future.
On the film side, Superman, which stars David Corenswet as the titular Kal-El, will start the ball rolling on 11 July 2025, and Milly Alcock’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will follow with its release set for 26 June 2026.
