Geek Test: Gaming On The iPad Air (2022)

Gaming on the go took on a new perspective when tablets entered the fold because while mobile phones offered portable convenience, display size and resolution proved to be an issue. Apple’s tablets changed the game, offering a larger display and portability, and proved that unlike PCs, hardware prowess wasn’t all that mattered.

The latest 10.9-inch iPad Air is proving to be a gaming contender, as it got a huge upgrade over its predecessor -last year’s new M1 chip, which was previously found in the iPad Pro, is now present in the new iPad Air. This means that the new iPad Air fuses the performance of the current iPad Pro with the slim, light form factor of the iPad Air, at a significant price drop. With an 8-core CPU and 8-core GPU, this new model is up to 60% faster than the previous model iPad Air, with twice the graphics processing speed.

The M1 chip allows the iPad Air to stream multiple 4K videos smoothly and also handle graphics-intensive games with ease. Camera-wise, the iPad Air now comes with an Ultra-Wide 12MP front camera with Centre Stage and a 12MP Wide camera that’s capable of taking 4K videos. Coming with a USB-C port, the tablet is capable of fast data transfers, making it a truly versatile device for a variety of situations.

With a Liquid Retina display, the visuals are crisp and sharp, and this is a device that can easily serve as a journal or sketchbook with its Apple Pencil 2nd Gen compatibility. Of course, as a testament to its versatility, it’s also compatible with the Magic Keyboard and Smart Keyboard Folio.

However, the proof is in the pudding when it comes to devices. Tablets, due to their bigger size, are able to give a more satisfying mobile gaming experience than smartphones. As mobile games come into their own and stellar titles become available on the platform, a tablet’s ability to cater to gamers becomes a crucial consideration for many users. As such, we decided to test out just how well the iPad Air performs when it comes to gaming.

The iPad Air could be the next dedicated mobile gaming device for gamers in the Apple ecosystem, who like the convenience of the slim form factor.
