Among Hideo Kojima’s line-up of games in the works, none are more mysterious than the horror title OD, with each of the game’s trailers raising more questions than answers. Now, it seems that Kojima himself shares those same sentiments, as he recently admitted that he’s unsure if the game will work out at all due to how different it is compared to any title he has made thus far.

This comes via an interview with ananweb, where the 62-year-old spoke on how OD will be something completely different from standard horror games, an ambitious plan that makes the title especially difficult to develop.
“I can’t say exactly what it is yet, nor do I know if it will work out. We’ve created stealth games and delivery games which were unlike anything before, but system-wise, they were similar to other games,” he explained (via a translated transcript by Automaton). “This time, we’re trying to change the service model from the ground up, so it should be quite challenging.”
The two gaming genres mentioned refer to his Metal Gear titles and Death Stranding franchise, both known for imbuing their respective genre staples with Kojima’s unique brand of worldbuilding and storytelling. From his comments, it seems that OD is set to be something completely unique to the horror gaming space, and while the title’s Knock trailer seems to allude to a more conventional first-person horror experience akin to the Outlast or Amnesia franchises, it might very well turn out to be something completely different.
OD was announced at The Game Awards 2023 with a creepy trailer featuring the likeness of actors Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and the late Udo Kier, with the game being developed in collaboration with horror filmmaker Jordan Peele (Nope, Us).
Since then, not much has been revealed about the title, but Kojima clearly has lofty goals to make it as scary as possible, even trying to scan a real ghost to use its likeness in-game, so even though he himself is unsure about the game’s scope, if anyone can make it work, it’s Kojima.
