Hayao Miyazaki Might Make Another Film

Since coming out of semi-retirement to make The Boy and the Heron, which would’ve been Ghibli filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki’s final feature film, it seems the director could have one more grand finale up his sleeve. Goro Miyazaki, speaking on behalf of his father, teased that Miyazaki could be working on another film.

“I’d tell him, ‘Make some (films) for future projects. Only making them (films) for your past stuff is boring.’ He’s making some now though.” Goro explained. “I don’t know if it’ll actually be for his next film, but it’s looking like an action-adventure-type movie, nostalgic and reminiscent of the old days.”

Whether the new film will be a sequel or an original work, it seems Miyazaki is at work on another project with plenty of action and nostalgia, but it’ll be a while before we hear from him. The Boy and the Heron spent seven years in development, and it isn’t unusual for Ghibli projects to have such a long timeframe.

We’re eagerly anticipating updates on Hayao Miyazaki’s next film, and until then, you can visit Ghibli Park to soak in the movie magic, or rewatch all 22 animated films.
