Hades, Animal Crossing & Ghost of Tsushima All Vying For Game of the Year At The Game Awards 2020

It’s that time of the year again where your favourite games of the past year are pitted against each other for the Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2020.

The annual awards show, hosted once again by Geoff Keighley, will take place on 10 December. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, it will instead be hosted in various studios in Los Angeles, London and Tokyo, away from a live audience, and streamed virtually across 45 video platforms, including Twitch and YouTube.

The social distancing measures taking place won’t take away from the fact that this year’s nominees are all really, really good games (a subjective opinion, of course). Leading the line with 10 nominations is Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part II, and hot on its trail is Supergiant Games’ heavy-hitting indie rogue-like title Hades with a surprise 8 nominations, and Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima with 7.

All three games are in the running for the coveted Game of the Year award, alongside Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Remake, id Software’s Doom Eternal, and Nintendo’s quarantine darling, Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

GOTY winners for previous iterations of The Game Awards include Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (2019), and God of War (2018).

Though not nominated for Game of the Year, there are several nominees that hail from the still-fresh PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X era, including Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

Voting for The Game Awards 2020 is available now on the official website, and will close on 9 December.
