‘Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance’ Taps Unreal Engine 5 Animation, Follows Universal Century Canon

The Gundam franchise has seen many retellings and new stories over the years, and its upcoming project will continue in the same vein – on the visuals front, at least. Announced at Anime Expo 2023, Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance is set to feature animation done entirely with Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5.

Not much else is known about the show, but writer Gavin Hignight (Tekken: Bloodline, Transformers: Cyberverse) confirmed the episodes are set in the Universal Century chronology of the first Mobile Suit Gundam story and its sequels. According to a trailer presented at the panel, the story is set “eleven months after the revolutionary war”, and will be told from the Zeon faction’s perspective, particularly from the Zaku mobile suits’ cockpits (via Anime News Network).

German artist Erasmus Brosdau is directing the project, with Naohiro Ogata (Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt) serving as producer. Australian actress Celia Massingham (DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Ladies in Black) voiced the lead character and performed the motion-capture for animation. Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt and Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team have both been cited as influences on the project, which doesn’t have a release window just yet.

Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance isn’t the only project fans can look forward to. The teaser visual and first English-subtitled trailer for Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM were also unveiled, as well as a theatrical opening date of 26 January 2024. Mitsuo Fukuda, director of Mobile Suit Gundam Seed, is returning to helm the animated feature, which will serve as a sequel to Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny.

The movie is part of the Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Project ignited initiative, first announced in 2021. Alongside a new Mobile Suit Gundam Seed game and the Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Eclipse side-story manga, it seeks to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the original Mobile Suit Gundam Seed anime, aired from 2002 to 2003. It was later followed by Gundam Seed Destiny from 2004 to 2005, making Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM a very nostalgic blast from the past.
