Guillermo del Toro Was Set To Direct Star Wars Movie Six Years Ago

Guillermo del Toro and David S. Goyer almost made a Star Wars movie.

In the recent episode of Happy Sad Confused podcast, Goyer shared that he actually “wrote an unproduced Star Wars movie that Guillermo del Toro was going to direct” four years ago.

del Toro later clarified on X (previously known as Twitter) that it was “MANY, MANY moons ago… about 6 years or so.”

The Dark Knight writer explained that the film was never greenlit due to “a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff going on at Lucasfilm at the time”. Goyer also added that it was “a cool script” and that “there’s a lot of cool artwork from it that was produced.”

The Pinocchio filmmaker confirmed that everything Goyer said was true. This isn’t the first time del Toro has been linked to a Star Wars project. The director had initially declined Star Wars: The Force Awakens because his schedule was “busy enough”. J.J Abrams later directed the 2015 entry.

In the same podcast, Goyer shared that he also wrote another unproduced script for an “origins of the Jedi movie”. It was set 25,000 years before the first Star Wars film.

“Dabbling in Star Wars would have been fun,” said Goyer.
