Godzilla Minus One took the box office by storm in 2023 with Japan’s biggest IMAX live-action opening to date and the largest Japanese live-action opening in the U.S. , and this week it achieved yet another milestone, being the first foreign-language film to cross the US$50 million mark since 2019. The holder for that record previously belonged to Korean film Parasite.
Set in post-war Japan, Godzilla Minus One brings what audiences love about the Godzilla movies with a distinct new feel. The film has a 98% score from both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki’s (Lupin III: The First) take on post-war horrors and in-depth characterisation.
Godzilla has had a successful year in 2023, with positive reception towards series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters when it released on Apple TV late last year, and high praise for Minus One. There’s more to come for fans of Godzilla, with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire hitting theatres this year.
Perhaps Godzilla Minus One might achieve its new goal of crossing the US$100 million mark at the box office after all.
