Universal Pictures released a new trailer for the highly anticipated disaster film sequel, Twisters, showcasing the dramatic and intense action that viewers can expect as characters grapple with devastating tornado outbreaks.
Twisters features Top Gun: Maverick‘s Glen Powell as Tyler Owens, a storm chaser and a reckless social media superstar who calls himself the ‘Tornado Wrangler’, and Normal People‘s Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kate Cooper, a former storm chaser still haunted by past tornado traumas. The film opens with the duo meeting and combining their contrasting tornado-chasing methods to save their community. They face numerous challenges, including double tornadoes, and a perilous fire tornado that gains speed and threatens to destroy everything in its path.
The cast also includes Anthony Ramos (Transformers: Rise of the Beasts) as Javi, Kate’s colleague, who experiences significant emotional turmoil due to the relentless tornadoes. Additionally, the film features appearances by David Corenswet (Pearl) and Katy O’Brian (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania) in undisclosed roles, along with other notable stars such as Daryl McCormack (Peaky Blinders), Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Brandon Perea (Nope), and Sasha Lane (Loki).
Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, known for his work on Minari and season three of The Mandalorian, Twisters promises to be a standalone sequel to the 1996 hit Twister, which starred Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton. Despite being a sequel, the new film is designed to be a separate story with different characters and settings, according to Glen Powell.
The film’s successful debut at CinemaCon added to the excitement, revealing more about the action-packed narrative and the dynamic between the characters played by Powell and Edgar-Jones. The new footage promises a thrilling adventure against a backdrop of catastrophic weather, with hopes of replicating the original’s commercial and critical success.
Twisters will open in cinemas on 19 July.
