Joseph Kosinski’s Miami Vice ’85 reboot has now begun filming, with Universal Pictures dropping the first look at Austin Butler (Elvis) and Michael B. Jordan (Sinners) as the iconic detective duo James “Sonny” Crockett and Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs.

Posted on both Universal Pictures’ and the film’s Instagram pages, the images feature Butler and Jordan each decked out in their own visual flair to fit the movie’s 1985 setting. According to the film’s official logline, Miami Vice ’85 “explores the glamour and corruption of mid-80s Miami” and is “inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking”, with its script written by Dan Gilroy and Eric Singer.
Other cast members of the reboot include Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Danny Ramirez, John Leguizamo, Andrew Schulz, Edi Gathegi, Walton Goggins, André Holland and Michael Irby. Director Kosinski will also double up as producer alongside Dylan Clark, with Executive VP of production development Sara Scott and creative executive of production development Christina Hoffrogge overseeing for Universal.

The reboot is based on the NBC TV series Miami Vice that ran from 1984 to 1989 and saw Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas taking on the roles of Sonny and Tubbs, respectively. The show centred on a New York Cop who journeys to Miami to find his brother’s murderer, eventually crossing paths and teaming up with a local undercover detective. The series would go on to see a reboot in 2006 of the same name, which was directed by Michael Mann and starred Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx as the iconic duo.
Miami Vice ’85 has also received a new release date and is now scheduled to launch on 19 May 2028.
