‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ Sequel Taps ‘Poltergeist’ Director Gil Kenan, New Cast To Return

The Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel has finally found a director! Gil Kenan (Poltergeist, Monster House) will be helming the anticipated sequel for Sony Pictures.

Kenan will also co-scribe with Jason Blumenfeld. Jason Reitman, who directed the previous pic, will still remain on the project as a writer-producer.

“It’s an absolute honour to pick up the proton pack and step behind the camera for the next chapter of the Spengler family saga,” said Kenan. “I just wish I could go back to 1984 and tell the kid in the sixth row of the Mann Valley West that one day he was going to get to direct a Ghostbusters film.”

Aside from a new director, the movie’s new ensemble that includes McKenna Grace, Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon is reported to return for the sequel too.

While not much is known about the sequel, we do know that the upcoming movie will follow Ecto-1 and return to the iconic Firehouse from Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II. The movie will also explore the next chapter of the Spengler family story too.

“A few years ago, my father handed me the keys to Ecto-1, and together we made Ghostbusters: Afterlife” said Reitman. Words will never express how grateful I am to have made a film with my father by my side. It’s now time to hand those keys to my creative partner and fellow Ghostbuster Gil Kenan, a brilliant director who will keep the Spengler spirit alive. I can only hope to provide him the same producorial care and support that my father showed me.”

The Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel will hit theatres on 20 December 2023.
