Gearbox’s ‘Borderlands 4’ Sequel Releasing 11 Days Earlier

Gearbox Software’s upcoming looter shooter sequel, Borderlands 4, will be released 11 days earlier than planned, according to CEO Randy Pitchford in a video that was mistakenly posted too early.

The video, which has since been taken down, was swiftly re-uploaded by fans on social media. In it, Pitchford announced the game’s early release in a light-hearted manner, saying: “Everything is going great, actually. In fact, everything is going kind of the best-case scenario. The game is awesome, the team is cooking, and so the launch date for Borderlands 4 is changing. We’re moving it forward. The launch date is now 12 September.”

“What? This never happens you guys! This never happens! We’re moving the launch date forward! You’re gonna get Borderlands 4 earlier!” he remarked, adding that fans would get to see more of the game via a deep dive during the upcoming PlayStation State of Play, which is set for 1 May, 5 am SGT.

While Borderlands 4’s early release is certainly news to celebrate, the announcement has sparked speculation over the decision to bring it forward. Since game publisher 2K Games is owned by Take-Two, some have theorised that this early release was made to give the game breathing room for an imminent launch of one of the year’s most anticipated titles, Grand Theft Auto 6, which currently has a vague release window of fall 2025 for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. With this shift, GTA6 could very well be releasing in the closing months of 2025, although these are pure conjecture at this point.

In any case, the game’s earlier release is great news all around for fans, and Borderlands 4, alongside 2K Games’ other major upcoming title set to arrive this Summer, Mafia: The Old Country, make the coming months a pretty busy period for the studio.

Borderlands 4 is now set for release on 12 September 2025 for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
