Gamescom 2022: Single-Handed Control For ‘Vikings On Trampolines’ Channels Old-School Fun And Competition

In a space where things can get overly complicated sometimes, going the simple route might just be the best chance for a game to stand out from the crowd. For D-Pad Studio, the creators behind the critically acclaimed Owlboy, that belief comes in the form of the aptly named Vikings on Trampolines. Having spent time experiencing the game at Gamescom 2022, you cannot help but appreciate how an innocuous idea can actually deliver gameplay that has bagfuls of fun.

Vikings On Trampolines gameplay

As the name suggests, up to four players can come together to control Vikings on trampolines, and depending on your persuasion, you can either work together or face off in a variety of modes.

Starting off with Adventure mode, we were introduced to essentially the main mode of the game, with players tasked to save the world from the veil Balloonie and his henchmen of balloons. While things start off easy enough, the way later stages change things up both in design and enemy variety will both delight and challenge players.

Jumping on a trampoline propels your Viking into the air, where players can maintain more air time with a single flap, or speed up their descent in the most opportune of moments to spike enemies out of existence. Whether you are playing with partners or bots, each Viking can become an additional launching point to keep another in the air longer. Cooperating and knowing when to support each other is the best way to enjoy and progress in Vikings on Trampolines, especially when unique boss encounters come into the mix.

It’s easy enough fighting against enemies when the stage is static and all you have to worry about is your landing. When a giant sea creature is destroying things left and right and removing entire platforms from the level, things can get hectic pretty fast.

For those who much rather face off competitively against others, Vikings on Trampolines offers plenty of variety in Versus mode as well. You could go for straight elimination matches across a great selection of maps, or try out something unique like jump rope or soccer with that dash of aerial Viking flair.

Perhaps what is most striking about Vikings on Trampolines is the fact that the game was designed to be played only with one hand. Controlling your character, the jumps or dives, all can be easily done using a single stick. Picking up a controller and playing is truly straightforward in this case.

Awesome gameplay aside, the pixel art and soundtrack of Vikings on Trampolines are also great incentives in getting gamers curious, and it will be in everyone’s best interest to give this potential gem a go whenever it launches. Fingers crossed for a 2023 release.
