‘Final Fantasy XIV’ Director Naoki Yoshida Wants ‘FFVII’ Crossover

The world of Final Fantasy XIV already has nods to other games in Square Enix’s popular JRPG series, but there’s always room for more. In the case of Final Fantasy VII, direct references to the Gold Saucer, characters like Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie, and more can be found within the popular MMO, setting the stage for a crossover event — which director Naoki Yoshida hopes will become a reality.

Speaking to PC Gamer, the man better known as Yoshi-P to fans expressed a very keen interest in “doing something together after the Remake series is completed”.

“Simply put, my personal wish is to approach [Final Fantasy VII] in earnest, but with the FFVII Remake series in development, I don’t want to get in their way,” he said. “I would be very happy if we could do something together after the Remake series is completed, and I’d like to ask players to support the FFVII Remake series as well so that this can happen as soon as possible!”

Now that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is out in the wild, the continuation, of course, refers to the remaining FFVII Remake trilogy entry that’s currently a work-in-progress. The four-year gap between the first two games means players could be in a long wait, but at least there will be some fresh content in the meantime.

Kicking things off this summer is the Dawntrail expansion, which introduces a new Pictomancer job, the female Hrothgar playable race, a new eight-player raid, a new town, and many other major features. Beyond that, Yoshida also highlighted plans to include more callbacks to the long-running franchise, although nothing concrete was shared.

“We have many plans and ideas, and will continue to incorporate the essence of various titles from the series to serve as a ‘theme park of the FF series,'” confirmed the producer.
