‘Extraction’ Director Sam Hargrave Driving Mattel Films’ Matchbox Movie

Mattel is revving up its plans for its cinematic universe after the success of Barbie with ever-popular die-cast vehicle toy brand Matchbox, which is getting a live-action movie at Skydance from Extraction director Sam Hargrave.

The toy cars rose to popularity in the 50s, and were small enough for children to bring to school that they’d fit inside a matchbox, hence the name, and has been going on for 70 years with new models still being produced.

And what’s a Matchbox movie without its lineup of monster trucks and racecars? It’ll likely involve an epic car chase, or racing of some sort, if Hargrave’s previous work on action-thriller franchise Extraction is anything to go by. David Coggeshall (Prey) and Jonathan Tropper (The Adam Project) will pen the screenplay.

Other Mattel film projects in the works include American Girl, Barney, Hot Wheels, Bob the Builder, Magic 8 Ball, Major Matt Mason, Masters of the Universe, Polly Pocket, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, Thomas & Friends, UNO, View-Master, and Wishbone
