‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Will Have Fun Tone Says Star Chris Pine, Of ‘Princess Bride’ Meets ‘Game of Thrones’

The Dungeons & Dragons live-action movie seems to be shaping up, and according to Collider’s interview with Chris Pine (The Contractor), this is a high fantasy adventure that’ll have its fair share of light-hearted comedy.

“There were a lot of laughs. The way that I’ve been describing it, it’s like Game of Thrones mixed with a little Princess Bride, just a smidge of Holy Grail; it’s somewhere in that ballpark. It’s a lot of fun. It’s got a lot of thrills. It’s poppy, it’s eighties heartfelt, there’s a bit of Goonies in there. My character, he’s the ultimate party planner. I think it’s going to be really good,” Pine said.

This mix of adventure and comedy is fitting, as Dungeons & Dragons‘ history as a tabletop role-playing game lends itself frequently to stories that are more hilarious and absurd than sombre and overly serious, and Pine’s references to Princess Bride, Monty Python and the Holy Grail are interesting because the former is a romantic comedy while the latter is sketch comedy. The blend of comedy and high fantasy drama is one that piques curiosity, and fans will definitely want to find out how directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein will balance these various elements while staying faithful to the source material.

Plot details are scarce for now, and hopefully, we won’t have to wait too long for more information to be revealed before Dungeons & Dragons‘ premiere on 3 March 2023.
