Drew Goddard To Write & Direct Fifth Matrix Movie With Lana Wachowski Producing

With the Matrix movie franchise celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2024, it’s hard to deny its impact in the pop culture space. Many loved the original, but the subsequent sequels earned less than glowing reviews, especially the latest installment – The Matrix Resurrections, which felt like the franchise was destined to become abandonware.

However, writer/director Drew Goddard has something up his sleeve. Goddard who was involved with hits such as The Martian, The Cabin in the Woods, and World War Z has convinced the folks at Warner Bros. to allow him to bring audiences once again down the rabbit hole.

The sequel would also be the first time the creators Lana and Lilly Wachowski would not be directly involved in the film. However, Lana Wachowski will still earn credits as an executive producer with the potential installment.

Over a quarter century ago, The Matrix captivated audiences with its mind-bending premise, groundbreaking visual effects, and iconic performance from Keanu Reeves. Co-written and co-directed by the Wachowski siblings, the film unveiled a simulated reality where intelligent machines used humans as living batteries, and a messianic figure named Neo was destined to lead a rebellion against them. Pioneering the slow-mo “bullet time” effect, the movie won Oscar awards for visual effects, editing, sound, and sound editing. With a worldwide gross of US$467 million at the time, The Matrix became a cultural phenomenon for years but has struggled to capture lightning in a bottle once again with its spin-offs, such as The Animatrix, faring better than the mainline franchise.

As part of the announcement, Goddard offered the following statement –

“It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life. Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world.”
