HBO Max has dropped the official trailer for its upcoming four-part miniseries DMZ.

Created by and showrun by Roberto Patino (Westworld, Sons of Anarchy), DMZ is set during a time when a second Civil War divides America. During the fallout, a medic named Alma Ortega loses her son. She thinks he’s in Manhattan, which had been evacuated and turned into a demilitarised zone. Determined to find and save him, Alma heads to the city and crosses paths with a crime boss (Benjamin Bratt) who takes advantage of the situation for his own gains.

Ava DuVernay (Selma, When They See Us), who executive produced DMZ and directed all four episodes described it as a show “set a few moments in the future on what would be if the worst of our divisions get to us.”

Aside from Dawson and Bratt, the series also stars Hoon Lee, Freddy Miyares, Jordan Preston Carter, and Venus Ariel. Rutina Wesley, Nora Dunn, Jade Wu, Rey Gallegos, Mamie Gummer, Agam Darshi, Juani Feliz, and Henry G. Sanders will also be in the limited series.

DMZ joins HBO Max’s long lineup of DC shows including Matt ReevesThe Batman spin-off series based on The Penguin and Arkham Asylum, as well as James Gunn‘s Peacemaker and upcoming The Suicide Squad-spin-off series.

Whilst based on a DC comic book, DMZ leans away from superheroes and focuses on dystopia, making it akin to politically charged shows like Watchmen.

DMZ premieres on HBO Max on 17 March 2022.
