Disney’s live-action Tangled movie has added another known name to its cast, as Andor’s Diego Luna has left the Republic to appear alongside Rapunzel in a mystery role.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Luna will join the project in a role that’s specifically created for the live-action remake, potentially signalling some changes in the movie’s narrative depending on how integral to the plot this new character will be. Luna joins Tangled’s already star-studded cast, comprising Teagan Croft (Titans) as Rapunzel, Milo Manheim (Zombies) as Flynn Rider, and Kathryn Hahn (Agatha All Along) as Mother Gothel.
Luna has been a part of the Disney family since 2016, as the star is well-known for his appearance as the hero of the Republic Alliance, Cassian Andor, in both Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and the titular 2022 Disney+ series, so it’s unclear if his new character in Tangled will be of the same heroic archetype, or if he will take on a more villainous role this time around.
2010’s Tangled was based on the Brothers Grimm Rapunzel fairy tale, and centred on a princess with magical long hair who spends her entire life locked in a tower by her evil step-mother, who kidnapped her when she was a baby to take advantage of her hair’s magical de-ageing properties. Rapunzel is eventually rescued by an outlaw named Flynn Rider (originally voiced by Zachary Levi), with the pair falling in love as they embark on an adventure to find her true home.

Directed by The Greatest Showman’s Michael Gracey, with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Thor: Love and Thunder) and Kristin Burr (Cruella) attached as writer and producer, respectively, the live-action take on the fairy tale looks set to balance the original storyline told by its source material with new story elements, thanks to the introduction of new characters. The film is set to begin production in Spain in June this year.
