James Cameron, the visionary director behind the groundbreaking Avatar series, has sparked excitement with the revelation of potential plans for a sixth and seventh installment.

Amidst the bustling production of the already confirmed sequels set for release in 2025, 2029, and 2031, Cameron’s creative gears are turning, inspired by the monumental success of Avatar: The Way of Water. This sequel, marking a historic achievement by crossing US$2 billion worldwide, has reinforced the franchise’s enduring appeal.

In a candid conversation with PEOPLE at the 51st Saturn Awards, Cameron shared insights into the current and future state of the Avatar universe. With the third movie wrapping up post-production and the fourth beginning principal photography, Cameron hinted at his expansive vision beyond the fifth film. The statement is as follows:

“We’re fully written through movie five, and I’ve got ideas for six and seven, although I’ll probably be handing the baton on at that point. I mean, mortality catches up. But I mean, we’re enjoying what we’re doing. We’re loving it. We get to work with great people.”

Cameron’s enthusiasm stems from the franchise’s proven ability to captivate audiences globally, a sentiment underscored by the overwhelming box-office success of The Way of Water. With Avatar maintaining its title as the highest-grossing film in history and its sequel securing the third spot, the director sees no reason to cap the series’ potential at five movies.

However, Cameron recognises the need for fresh energy and vision to continue expanding the Avatar narrative. As he contemplates future projects, the possibility of exploring new directions and characters within Pandora’s rich ecosystem is tantalising. The mention of fire and wind-based Na’vi clans in the upcoming films hints at the untapped storytelling opportunities within this “young universe”.

While specific details about the upcoming sequels remain closely guarded, Cameron’s ambition to delve deeper into Pandora’s mysteries is evident. The director’s commitment to storytelling innovation, coupled with his acknowledgement of the evolving cinematic landscape, suggests that the Avatar saga could indeed transcend its current horizons.

As anticipation builds for the forthcoming releases, fans can rest assured that the journey through Pandora is far from over. Whether Cameron is at the helm or a new visionary takes the lead, the Avatar franchise promises to continue its legacy of immersive storytelling and visual splendour.

With Avatar 3 set to premiere in December 2025, the stage is set for an epic continuation of this cinematic odyssey.
