DCU’s ‘Supergirl’ Won’t Follow Tom King’s Comic “Religiously”

Adapting a beloved work always comes with certain expectations, and faithfulness to the source material is always one of them. While the highly anticipated trailer for the upcoming Supergirl offered a glimpse of a flawed, messy antihero-turned-superheroine, story details remain sparse, but one thing’s for certain — it won’t be a beat-by-beat adaptation of Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic.

Speaking to Variety, the DC Studios co-head shared that the forthcoming adventure does indeed pull from the Eisner-nominated maxiseries, just not “religiously”.

“I love Milly Alcock in the movie. It’s a space fantasy which is, like Guardians [of the Galaxy] in a way, but based on the Tom King book. It doesn’t follow it religiously, but it has a lot of the core of that there,” said Gunn at the 32:30 mark in the podcast. “I’m really excited for people to see Milly.”

Published by DC Comics as a part of the Infinite Frontier initiative, the comic book series follows the eponymous character as she helps a young warrior track the violent killer who slew her father across the universe. It takes on a darker tone, with the House of the Dragon star set to reprise her role as Kara Zor-El after enjoying a cameo at the end of 2025’s Superman.

Joining Alcock on the silver screen are Matthias Schoenaerts (The Mustang) as Krem of the Yellow Hills, Eve Ridley (3 Body Problem) as the young alien girl Ruthye Marye Knoll, Jason Momoa (Aquaman) as the space mercenary Lobo, as well as David Krumholtz (Numb3rs) and Emily Beecham (Into the Badlands) as Kara’s parents Zor-El and Alura In-Ze.

Supergirl is directed by Craig Gillespie (CruellaI, Tonya) and will soar into theatres on 25 June 2026. The official description for it reads, “When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.”
