D23 Expo 2019 – Rey Finally Falls To The Dark Side In Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Finally, the Sith have revealed themselves.

Rey wields a double-bladed red lightsaber, as fans hear the sound of Darth Vader’s iconic laboured breathing. An epic duel between Rey and Kylo Ren takes place on a piece of Death Star debris with relentless sea waves bashing them. And towards the skies, fleets of Star Destroyers and X-Wings are engaged in an equally epic fight. And there’s no doubt that Emperor Palpatine is watching all this unfold, based on the new teaser poster reveal below.

These were the glimpses of what Star Wars fans will be getting from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, come this December 20th.l, as the exclusive preview footage shown during the D23 Expo on Saturday morning left the crowd gasping with excitement.

At least we won’t have to wait long till the footage is revealed on Monday (Aug 26th).

The reel capped off an emotional reunion of many members of the cast — Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels, Keri Russell, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, and Naomi Ackie — from The Rise of Skywalker, who took to the stage with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and J.J. Abrams, director of two Star Wars movies from this sequel trilogy.

During the panel, a new artistic teaser poster of Emperor Palpatine overlooking Rey and Kylo Ren duelling it out was also revealed.

Franchise newcomer Keri Russell also revealed a few new details about her character, Zorii Bliss, who has a criminal past and is an old friend of Poe Dameron.

It was so exciting. First of all, the main thing is my son actually thinks I’m cool now. I had this amazing costume and this helmet, which I actually loved to wear and didn’t take it off for about the first two days. I wore it the whole time, but I found it incredibly, strangely empowering and exciting. I can’t wait for you guys to meet Zorii. She’s very cool and a little bit shady.

The pedigree Star Wars has was laid out for all to see. With an entire series featuring a montage of scenes combed from other saga films, the unmistakable voice of Mark Hamill could be heard over the striking new scenes. “We’ve passed on all we know. A thousand generations live in you now. But this is your fight.” These wise words were also part of the first trailer for the film, but now with new footage. It is in this moment where Rey appears to toss a fully-ignited lightsaber, not one of the Jedi order but one with a reticulated red blade.

Misdirection or Rey’s actual turn to the Dark side? We shall see soon enough.
