The Old Guard 2, Netflix’s highly anticipated sequel, is poised for release “soon”, according to lead actress Charlize Theron. Amidst a restructuring at Netflix, the film experienced significant delays, but it is now back on track, Theron reassured during a recent interview with Variety at her Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project Block Party.
Originally wrapped two years ago, The Old Guard 2 had faced unforeseen delays due to what Theron described as a “changeover” at Netflix, affecting the post-production schedule significantly. The project, which had commenced post-production, found itself halted five weeks in due to the executive shifts within the company. Additionally, industry strikes posed further challenges, potentially affecting additional recording or reshoots. “They were going through a lot of changes, and I totally understand it. We finally picked it back up and I’m really excited about it,” she said.
Despite these setbacks, Theron expressed her enthusiasm for the film’s progress and its impending release. She emphasised the film’s quality and significance to her, stating, “It’s really good. It’s a really important film to us. I only wanted to do it if we could make it amazing. I really love this movie.”
The Old Guard, released in 2020, was a hit for Netflix, drawing viewership from 72 million households within the first four weeks. Based on Greg Rucka’s comic book, the film was directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King) and introduced audiences to a band of immortal mercenaries led by Theron’s character, Andy. These mercenaries have secretly safeguarded the mortal world for centuries.
Victoria Mahoney (Yelling to the Sky) takes the directorial helm for the sequel, with Uma Thurman and Henry Golding joining the returning ensemble, including Theron, Kiki Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. The storyline continues to follow Andy and her team as they tackle new adversaries and challenges, striving to protect their unique abilities from exploitation.
With Theron’s recent confirmation, anticipation builds for the sequel’s release, promising to deliver the same intense action and deep storytelling as its predecessor.
