Revenge stories are a dime a dozen, but there’s no denying that Netflix struck gold with Blue Eye Samurai. The visually striking sword-swinging animation and gripping storytelling left many excited for its second season, and the first official look at it has finally surfaced after a two-year silence.

In the new poster, protagonist Mizu (Maya Erskine, Pen15) is seen looking out at the distant land shrouded in fog while standing at the front of a ship, with her trusty sword in hand. “The award-winning series returns,” reads the caption, alongside a release date of “coming soon”.
No other details, including a release date, episode count, and new cast additions, were shared about its sophomore outing. The first season followed the half-white, half-Japanese Mizu on her quest for vengeance against her father and three other white men, who illegally remained in Japan when the Tokugawa shogunate closed the country’s borders, culminating in a finale that saw her leaving for London on a ship with her captive, Abijah Fowler (Kenneth Branagh, Hercule Poirot series).
In addition to Erskine and Branagh, Blue Eye Samurai also starred George Takei (Seki), Masi Oka (Ringo), Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (The Swordmaker), Brenda Song (Akemi), Darren Barnet (Taigen), and Randall Park (Heiji Shindo). Stephanie Hsu (Ise), Ming-Na Wen (Madame Kaji), Harry Shum Jr. (Takayoshi), Mark Dacascos (Chiaki), and more.

Blue Spirit, who worked on the first season of Marvel’s What If…?, animated the eight-episode show. Series co-creators Amber Noizumi and Michael Green, as well as Erwin Stoff, served as executive producer, while Jane Wu was supervising director and producer. At least one newcomer will be on board for production on the sequel, with Ultraman: Rising director John Aoshima stepping in to helm an episode.
Season 2 of Blue Eye Samurai has no release date.
