Bloober Team’s ‘Silent Hill 2′ Remake Targets ‘Mass Market’ Horror Over Psychological Terror

The days of psychological horror are over, at least, for developers over at Bloober Team. The folks best known for their horror chops are hoping to find more success with games that will bring in more action and require more input from the players, and that will begin with the upcoming Silent Hill 2 remake.

“We focused on the story, we focused on the mood, we focused on the quality of graphics and music, but we didn’t put a lot of attention on the gameplay mechanics,” said Piotr Babieno, co-founder of Bloober Team, in an interview with Engadget. “It wasn’t our target. But we decided that there was a ceiling that we couldn’t break if we did not deliver something fresh, something new.

After the likes of The Medium, Blair Witch, Observer, and Layers of Fear, the team will no longer put psychological horror front and centre. This new direction, led by what is being called Bloober Team 3.0, officially kicked off with the June release of the 2023 remake of Layers of Fear. This means players can expect titles from the team that are more akin to Capcom’s Resident Evil instead of the usual fare.

“We decided that our next titles should be much more mass-market oriented. We’d like to talk with more people. We’d like to deliver our ideas, with our DNA, not by environment or storytelling, but by action. So all of our future titles will have a lot of gameplay mechanics. They will be much bigger,” Babieno continued about the new vision for Bloober Team.

How that will all shake out is still a question that is yet to be answered, especially with the Silent Hill 2 remake not having a release date just yet. Details are predictably scarce at this point, but hopefully, the changes being made and the updates the game will get will allow it to find success as Bloober Team envisioned.
