Charlie Brooker’s genre-bending anthology Black Mirror is returning to Netflix for its eighth season, with Brooker currently hard at work dreaming up his approach to new genres for the series.

“Black Mirror will return, and hopefully it’ll be more Black Mirror than ever,” Brooker teased in a recent interview with Tudum. “That chunk of my brain has already been activated and is whirring away.”
This reveal comes hot off Season Seven’s nominations at the Golden Globes, a first since the series’ debut in 2011. The season was nominated for Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television, while stars Rashida Jones (Parks and Recreation) and Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers) have both been nominated for acting awards for their performances.
Brooker also explained that he is busy tweaking his approach to the varying genres seen across the series, which range from horror to sci-fi, and even romantic comedies. “It’s a useful thought experiment when approaching a new story,” he explained, “I’ll often think of, ‘Well, what haven’t we done yet, and what tone am I looking for? … Where does this track come on the album, and what musical direction are we going to go into?’ We’ll find out.”

Season Seven featured its first-ever sequel episode with a follow-up to “USS Callister” from Season Four, with Cristin Milioti reprising her role as Nanette Cole. Its second episode, “Bête Noire”, also made headlines when it was sneakily released in two subtly different versions, reinforcing its thematic exploration of perceived truth.
Aside from the confirmation that Black Mirror will return for its eighth season, no further plot or casting details were released. Elsewhere, Brooker is also working on an untitled four-part Netflix detective series, which stars Paddy Considine (House of the Dragon), Lena Headey (Game of Thrones), and Georgina Campbell (Barbarian), and is described as being “profoundly serious”.
