Studio Ghibli is beloved for their heartwarming stories of beautiful friendships, romances and family. Another defining feature is their use of traditional 2D animation. After all, it’s almost impossible to replicate the feeling soft pencil markings and fine brush strokes in 3D CG animation…right?
Enter Sketchfab user Granicoph (@granicoph), who challenges this notion by creating a 3D CG model that looks exactly like of Studio Ghibli’s Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Yes, the image you see above isn’t an anime cel but a shot from the 360 3D CG model!
If you still can’t believe your eyes you may try toggling the model around below. You can even zoom out to view the multiple layers of the dense Toxic Jungle or zoom in to inspect the fungi. You can even try it out with a VR headset for a more immersive experience.
Aptly titled Nausicaa in Toxic Jungle, the 3D model absolutely captures the Studio Ghibli feel, right down to the analogue colour pigments and shadings. The artist has even created a model of Nausicaa traversing through the desert on her iconic glider.
So far, these are the only two models that Granicoph has posted, but we look forward to more awesome 3D Studio Ghibli recreations from him soon!
