This summer, enter Barbie Land – and bring your rollerskates, as the new Barbie trailer is upon us. With the earlier trailer paying homage to Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey and the second featuring a pastel-themed summer beach, we still have no idea what the plot of the ‘Barbie‘ movie is. People having fun would be one way to put it, as the Kens battle it out and the Barbies party on.
With the trailer’s release comes 24 new character posters which have been turned into memes by the community, as Barbie made it to the top trending topic on Twitter.
Starring Margot Robbie as Barbie, with Dua Lipa as Mermaid Barbie and Emma Mackey as Nobel Prize Barbie, it’s clear that Barbie is in fact, everything. The Kens are credited as well, Kens. Ryan Gosling is ‘just Ken’, and Simu Liu is ‘just another Ken.’ Will Ferrell, who plays the CEO of Mattel, says the film will “comment on male patriarchy and women in society,” which the film’s marketing plays up.
Interestingly enough, there’s also a third category in the posters – humans – which hints at the movie breaking the fourth wall. When Barbie and Ken leave Barbie Land for the real world, Barbie meets the stunned CEO of Mattel, whose creation has come to life in a strange Frankenstein-style fashion.
Barbie Land is a pastel paradise with pink beaches, glitzy parties, and of course, Ken drama. While the characters can’t swear, they get around it in creative and comical ways. “Nobody’s going to beach anyone off,” says Margot Robbie’s Barbie as she mediates a fight between Ryan Gosling’s Ken and Simu Liu’s Ken.
We’re excited to see where the ‘Barbie‘ movie takes us when it hits cinemas this July, with the trailer teasing a fun two hours of Barbie nostalgia and hilarious shenanigans.
