Zach Cregger is returning to pen the script for the prequel story to his 2025 horror hit, Weapons, tapping on fellow writer Zach Shields to craft the origin story of the film’s major antagonist, Aunt Gladys.

As reported by Deadline, the project, which is currently under the working title Gladys, will explore the origins of the titular antagonist, portrayed by actress Amy Madigan (Bull Street) in the 2025 film, with the role netting her an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
While plot details for the upcoming prequel have not been confirmed as the project is still in its infancy, Shields is best known for his work on the recent Godzilla films, including 2024’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, and 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, as well as the 2015 Christmas comedy horror film Krampus. He also served as consulting producer on the Apple TV series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
Cregger, meanwhile, will be returning to the IP as a writer, although it is currently unknown if his involvement ends there, or if he will also take on the role as the prequel’s director, as the 45-year-old filmmaker is currently hard at work crafting his film reboot of Resident Evil, which is slated for release in September this year.

Starring Madigan alongside Julia Garner (The Fantastic Four: First Steps), Josh Brolin (Avengers: Endgame), Alden Ehrenreich (Ironheart), and Austin Abrams (Paper Towns), 2025’s Weapons follows a teacher whose students mysteriously vanish in the middle of the night, and a grieving father who suspects her involvement. The film was a breakout success, garnering over US$270 million worldwide.
