‘Aquaman’ Sequel Retool & Reshoots Cuts Ben Affleck’s Batman Cameo & More

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is going through some major rehauls, and one of them involves cutting out a scene with Ben Affleck as Batman.

Aquaman 2 has gone through a number of reshoots and edits at this point in time. It was first meant to feature Michael Keaton’s Batman following his return in The Flash and have him appear throughout other projects and be a mentor to the supers, much like Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Nick Fury. However, reshoots in 2020 replaced Keaton with Ben Affleck.

Affleck’s cameo was confirmed when a photo of him and star Jason Momoa was posted on social media, but after a third round of reshoots, Batfleck is no more.

DC co-CEO James Gunn has decided to cut Affleck’s Batman out of the sequel. It seems like the multiple Bats in The Flash failed to make an impression at the box office so DC heads Gunn and Peter Safran might take a new approach, preferably making Aquaman 2 a standalone so that it can better reflect the changes happening currently in the new DC Universe, as well as to cut ties from the DC Extended Universe.

DC has had a rough time in cinemas as of late. Black Adam, Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash underwhelmed at the box office and while Gunn and Safran’s is only hitting the hard reboot with Superman: Legacy in July 2025, it doesn’t mean Aquaman 2 should suffer the same fate as the movies that came before it. Afterall, another flop can be extremely damaging for the DC brand – incoming reboot or not.

Before Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom splashes into cinemas on 20 December, fans will first have to catch Blue Beetle this August. The movie has been denied reshoots and will continue to screens on 17 August. It stars Xolo Maridueña as the titular character and is directed by Angel Manuel Soto.
