Serenity is finding its place back in the sky, kind of. Firefly star Nathan Fillion has revealed plans for a crew reunion, announcing at Awesome Con that an animated reboot of the cult hit series is in very early stages of development.
As Deadline reports, it will take place between the show and 2005’s Serenity, with married writing-producing duo Marc Guggenheim (DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow) and Tara Butters (Agent Carter, Reaper) serving as showrunners. Animation studio ShadowMachine is handling the animation, which also unveiled early concept art of the characters:

While creator Joss Whedon – now a controversial figure due to multiple allegations of toxic workplace environments – won’t be returning, Fillion confirmed the filmmaker has given his blessing for the project. A script has been completed, and no streamer is attached just yet.
Taking the news to Instagram, the actor urged fans to spread the word: “The word is out. To keep Firefly flying, we need a home. And for that we need you. Like this post, comment on this post, repost this post. Tag a friend, tag an enemy, even tag a Reaver. Give us some ‘quantifiable analytics’ that we can use to convince folks that this is something people want.”
Set 500 years into the future during a global civil war, Firefly followed a renegade crew aboard the transport ship Serenity, who take on risky jobs to survive life on the fringes while avoiding the governing body of Alliance. It was cancelled after 11 episodes (out of the 14 produced episodes) largely because of low ratings, but gained a cult following soon after its 2002 premiere, and received a film continuation in the form of Serenity.

Alongside Fillion as Mal Reynolds, Whedon’s original series starred Gina Torres as Zoe Alleyne Washburne, Alan Tudyck (Hoban “Wash” Washburne, Adam Baldwin (Jayne Cobb), Jewel Staite (Kaylee Frye), Morena Baccarin (Inara Serra), Sean Maher (Simon Tam), Summer Glau (River Tam), and Ron Glass (Shepherd Brook), who passed away in 2016.
