If Dungeons & Dragons has a list of things to be thankful for pertaining to its surge in popularity in recent years, Stranger Things has got to be one of the top items there. So you’ve seen the characters play D&D in the show, now you’ll get to watch them actually play an actual game for the first time ever.
Netflix, in tandem with Wizards of the Coast, has announced an upcoming live play one-shot D&D game, Lost Odyssey: Toy Time for Ten-Towns, and will premiere on the Stranger Things YouTube channel on 18 December.
The game will feature Finn Wolfhard (Mike Wheeler), Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin Henderson), Natalia Dyer (Nancy Wheeler), and David Harbour (Jim Hopper) playing as various fantasy characters. Leading them as the Dungeon Master will be Chris Perkins, D&D‘s principal story designer and DM of various other web series including Acquisitions Incorporated and Dice, Camera, Action!.
The Netflix series has heavily featured the popular tabletop role-playing game in all of its three seasons so far, and it has almost singlehandedly propelled the game to greater heights in its entire history. As such, seeing this one-off game will be a coming full circle for the show and its cast members.
In the meantime, the fourth season of Stranger Things is still currently in production, with no release date officially announced yet.
Marion has a serious RPG addiction. Sometimes it bleeds into real life; he forgets to sleep because he thinks he has a Witcher’s body clock. Forgive him in advance if he suddenly blurts out terms such as “Mind Flayer” and “Magic Missile”, because never once does he stop thinking about his next Dungeons & Dragons game.
