Obsidian Entertainment’s Upcoming The Outer Worlds Claims Pure Pacifist Playthrough Can Be A Reality!

The upcoming dieselpunk shooter, The Outer Worlds, is shaping up to be a throwback to its role-playing roots by giving players the option to beat the game without having to kill anyone.

Not killing anyone in a shooter, you say? Well, the developers at Obsidian Entertainment like to think so. In a recent rapid-fire interview done by Game Informer, The Outer Worlds co-directors Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky were asked about the possibility of beating the game by taking on a pacifist approach, to which they coyly responded with “we hope so”.

Given a track record of story-intensive hits with multiple ways to solve encounters such as Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity, you’d expect Obsidian to do this sort of thing. Cain and Boyarsky also teased that there will be multiple endings in the game, so it’s definitely within the realm of possibility that non-lethal playthroughs can be done. Just take a look at the recent Deus Ex titles.

Obsidian reiterated time and again that The Outer Worlds will focus heavily on a story-driven experience with shooter elements, as echoed by the duo. That said, there will be a proper system where you’ll be able to build your character to your own heart’s desire. Having been snapped up by Microsoft last year, the studio will undoubtedly have more tools at their disposal with which to deliver a AAA experience with this game.

Cain and Boyarsky also personally assured Game Informer (and us) that The Outer Worlds is set to launch sometime later this 2019 on PC, PS4 and Xbox One, so that’s something we’re definitely looking forward to.
