CES 2019: 3dRudder’s PSVR Controller Gives You Virtual Freedom With Your Feet

Over the years companies have been making tremendous strides in perfecting the Virtual Reality (VR) experience and increasing its player’s immersion. Yet despite that, it still has some glaring shortcomings that cannot be ignored. Such as the issue of movement in-game, an issue that 3dRudder’s Foot Motion Controller aims to solve for the PlayStation VR (PSVR).

The 3dRudder Foot Motion Controller is an unassuming circular disk that is similar to a rudder or balance board. Players sit down and place their feet on the footpads of the Controller, from there players can control their movement in-game by teetering the device using their feet — moving it front and back, as well as side-to-side to simulate movement in-game.

Since its inception, players using the PSVR could only move using their PS Move Controllers, a device that Sony has also acknowledged to be the weakest aspect in their push into VR. Players could only move around by pointing and clicking at a location that they want to get to.

With 3dRudder’s Controllers, the player’s movements are finally hands-free, allowing them to be able to focus on more important aspects of the game such as aiming their weapon to take down monsters.

While the 3dRudder Foot Motion Controller will never give players a truly immersive VR experience that other devices such as the Oculus Quest can, it is still a welcome option for the PSVR.

The Foot Motion Controller is currently compatible with over 30 different PSVR games, some of which include Bow to Blood, The Wizards, and Sairento. No news yet on 3dRudder working with Skyrim VR but it will probably happen sometime in the future.

The 3dRudder Foot Motion Controller will be released in April and is priced at US$119.
